Discard maturity of hoist chains

Safety begins with inspection - keeping an eye on your hoist chains

When it comes to safe load handling, regular inspection and assessment of hoist chains is essential. Because only those who recognise when their chains are ready to be discarded at an early stage can protect people, materials and machines from dangerous incidents. On this page, you can find out what you need to look out for, which criteria apply and how you can play it safe with RUD. Put your trust in our decades of experience and our comprehensive expertise - for maximum safety in everyday lifting operations.

When do you change?

  • If the average wire diameter dm on the chain link has decreased by more than 10 % of the nominal thickness.
  • The average wire diameter is calculated from two individual values d1 and d2 measured at 90° to each other, which should not exceed a value of 0.9*diameter (dm = (d1+d2):2 ≤ 0.9d).
  • Replace the chain if an individual chain link is permanently stretched or if the inner pitch (t) of the individual link has increased by more than 5 % due to wear.
  • Replace the chain if the inner pitch 11t has increased by more than 2 % due to wear over a measuring distance of 11 chain links.
