Checking the chain drive

Reliability that moves - systematic chain drive testing

The chain drive is the heart of many hoists - and its perfect functioning is crucial for safety and efficiency in operation. Regular, professional inspections are the only way to detect wear, damage or malfunctions at an early stage and avoid costly breakdowns. On this page, we will show you what is important when testing chain drives, what standards apply and how RUD can support you with high-quality testing tools and expert knowledge. For smooth operation - today and tomorrow.

Regular inspection of the chain drive

The chain for hoists must be inspected at regular intervals, but at least once a year, in accordance with DIN 685 Part 5 and the applicable accident prevention regulations (UVV).

With increasing frequency of use, wear, corrosion, the effects of heat and increased susceptibility to faults, the inspection intervals must be shortened and adapted to the existing operating conditions. As long as no empirical values on wear behavior under actual operating conditions are available, an inspection must be carried out every time the chain is relubricated.

The inspection covers the detection of external defects, deformations, cracks, wear and corrosion scars. During the inspection, the entire length of the chains must be inspected, including the concealed parts. If the lifting device is frequently operated with a constant lifting path, or if it is frequently operated in the same area from the upward to the downward movement, then this changeover area must be checked and lubricated particularly thoroughly.

Together with the chain, the wheels, chain guides and fastening parts must also be checked for damage, corrosion or unusual wear points or similar. Particular attention must be paid to the condition of the bolted and securing parts. Any defects found must be rectified immediately.
